Position Description

University of Utah, Department of Mathematics

Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Mathematics, Asia Campus (2024-2025)

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Utah invites applications for one full-time, non-tenure-track, career-line Assistant Professor (Lecturer) position to join our growing international team of faculty. The successful applicant will teach mathematics courses at the University of Utah Asia Campus  (UAC) in Songdo, Incheon, South Korea; for more detail see https://asiacampus.utah.edu.

Located in Songdo, South Korea, the University of Utah Asia Campus provides students with the same world-class academic experience offered at the campus in Salt Lake City. By studying at both locations, students gain a truly international experience that prepares them for success in a globalized society. The campus is part of the Incheon Global campus, which also includes State University of New York, George Mason University, and Ghent University. The undergraduate students spend three years studying at the University of Utah Asia Campus in South Korea and one year at the Salt Lake City campus in Utah. Most of the student body is Korean, but the number of international students is rapidly growing. Asia Campus favors smaller classes and a more intimate and focused environment between the professors and their students.

We are looking for faculty who are excited to help build our new campus and support the development of cross-cultural educational opportunities. The successful candidate will teach seven core courses in the undergraduate program per year, typically as 3-4, 4-3, or 3-3-1 with the 1 being taught during summer or winter break. All instruction and interaction with students and other faculty will be carried out in English. Knowledge of Korean is not expected.

We anticipate an initial one-year appointment with renewable annual appointments at the UAC upon satisfactory performance reviews. Salary is commensurate with experience. All full-time employees are provided a health benefit plan. This position requires relocation to South Korea. Housing is provided for UAC employees. Some personal and professional travel expenses are also provided by the UAC.

Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Mathematics or related fields, some experience in the development of instructional mathematics curricula, and some background in the preparation and teaching of hands-on classroom experiences.

Applications must include: (1) a cover letter; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of teaching experience, goals, and philosophy; and (4) three or more letters of recommendation that address the candidate’s teaching record.

Applications must be completed through MathJobs at https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/UofUtah. Please see also our website at https://www.math.utah.edu/about/faculty-hiring-current.phpfor additional information regarding available positions.

Review of complete applications will begin on November 15, 2024, and may continue until the position is filled.  The position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.
